As a type 1 diabetic myself, diagnosed at the age of 18, I was researching personal stories similar to mine. I have recently self-published a book about my life as a diabetic and I was curious to see how others dealt with the illness. For the longest time I thought I was alone and I never reached out to the diabetes community. That has changed over the last several years. Colvin's book was on top of my diabetes reading list partially due to its personal story nature, and partially because of its connection to Dr. Faustman, whose research I am obviously interested in.The book was not what I expected. But that is not a bad thing at all. It was a very pleasant surprise. I thought the book was going to focus on Dr. Faustman's research and the family's involvement in it. However, it is a beautifully written, very personal story of a mother dealing with a diabetic child, and her determination to find a cure for her daughter, (and everyone else who suffers from this illness).
I was incredibly inspired by the author's drive to find a way to deal with this situation. Being a diabetic I understand it's a world of difference having it yourself (and being an adult) versus being a parent of a young diabetic child and not having as much control over it. I can only imagine the worries a parent must have, and Colvin communicates these very well in the book. She made me understand what it's like for our loved ones to deal with our illness.
Overall, I think the interwoven stories of Emma's struggles (which I can personally relate to), and the author's personal journey to understand herself, her daughter's illness, and find a way to cope that actually involves a cure in the end, rather than just merely accepting and living with the disease, complement each other well. Even if the author's beliefs are not your own (though I myself share many of her beliefs) this is an uplifting story of self-discovery, strength, courage and perseverance - a story which resonates with many of us, even non-diabetics. At the very least by reading this book you will learn about Dr. Faustman, and the day-to-day struggles of those of us living with type 1 diabetes. I believe a portion of the profits from the book go to Dr. Faustman's research, so please support this cause and buy the book. You won't be disappointed, as all of us can use an encouraging story in our lives.

I recently ordered Julie Colvin's `A Cure for Emma' from and finished reading it today. I bought it because I knew the author as a child I didn't think it would really be relevant to me as I haven't been personally impacted by diabetes. How wrong I was and how glad I am that a friend recommended the book to me.
It's an incredibly well-written book with a story line that will resonate with anyone who has ever faced a challenge of any type. Colvin writes with a poignant honesty absent of any malice. She is a powerful communicator and storyteller who manages to be warm and analytical at the same time. She writes with a clear-eyed intelligence infused with humour. These are rare gifts in a writer.
Given Colvin's scientific background I was touched to see how her maternal instinct shines through in every page. The book manages to be heartwarming without being maudlin she might even be forgiven for that approach as the mother of a chronically ill child, but Julie doesn't take the easy route.
The central story is about the search for a cure for Type 1 diabetes by the mother of a diabetic. However, it ends up being much broader in scope as Colvin speaks eloquently to the struggles we all face in life in all of our often complex relationships as....daughter, sister, mother, wife and friend.
This is worthy book that is not just about illness but about facing fears and making choices. Julie Colvin's' ability to stay open to love and hope are really inspiring and I recommend the book to anyone can use a little uplifting.
I'm a mom of a type 1 who was 12yr at diagnosis and is now 18. While I was really hoping this would finally be a book to show the entire type 1 diabetes and all we and our kids go through, sadly, it is not. The very beginning and the end contains type 1 related life. Everything else is the author finding her way through life while running from one new age idea to another fruit loop thinking. Just another waste of paper. I so WISH someone would write about Type 1 and all it entails. Then and only then would we and our kids get the support needed. Also, then and only then will the public understand and realize the differences between type 1&2 and the true severity of type 1. While this is a quick read, I would not recommend people waste their money. My purchased copy did not get passed along to someone like a great find to share. Instead-it went directly in the trash. I'm truly sorry I wasted money on it.
Years ago, when The Secret became popular, I was highly annoyed by people telling me I could think positive thoughts and my sons diabetes would go away. Keep in mind I don't even act like a cloud is hanging over me, I'm just your average sleep deprived mom who wants the best for my children. This books readers got even more annoying when a friend told me my son needs to think positive to cure himself and he got this because he was too negative, he was 2 at the time and his thoughts consisted of spiderman and that strange toilet contraption mommy keeps sitting him on. The Secret was just another "cure" that people tried to "help" me with, I know if you are reading this and have diabetes or a child with diabetes you are routinely told to try some special diet or herbal supplement.
I heard about this book and ordered it without really looking much into what it's about and got a bit afraid when I began to read references to the book that annoyed me before. But this book is not just stating "do this and there is a cure" like previous people stated to me like it was so simple. This book is a journey of how this mom got out of the sneaky in-a-funk cycle which I can relate to in many ways. The hippie in me appreciated the auras and plant based diet stuff. I am glad that this author donated some of her proceeds to Dr. Faustman, gives me the warm fuzzies any time I read about her work.
