Baroness Orczy was a novelist, playwright and artist born in Hungary to Baron Felix Orczy a well known composer and conductor. Orczy became famous in 1905 when she published The Scarlet Pimpernel and still is best known for his adventures. With the background of the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution her swashbuckling hero Sir Percy Blakeney represents the original hero with a secret identity. Her novels are Racy as she frequently favors historical fiction.

This is my ninth Scarlet Pimpernel book, so it's reasonable for you to assume that I enjoy Baroness Orczy's books. I do. I love the character of Sir Percy Blakeney / the Scarlet Pimpernel, but that's also the problem. In this, and some of the other sequels, there's just not enough of him!

About a third of "Lord Tony's Wife" is quite wonderful. The story is exciting, Sir Percy and the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel are "on screen" doing their thing. Sadly, there's also a long slog through the nasty details of The Terror and the entirely unappealing characters of Representative Carrier and Citizen Martin-Roget / Pierre Adet. The unsavoriness of the French Revolution is spelled out in far too much length, especially for anyone who has read the original "Scarlet Pimpernel" (and why would you be reading this sequel else?) or any of the other sequels.

"Lord Tony's Wife" has three sections -- Prologue: Nantes, 1789; Book I: Bath, 1793; and Book II: Nantes, December, 1793. The prologue establishes the characters of Pierre Adet (later Martin-Roget), M. le duc de Kernogan, and his daughter Yvonne de Kernogan (later, Lord Tony's wife). All three come across as pretty unlikeable, though ironically, Pierre Adet is the most sympathetic of the three, since he is treated completely unjustly. Still, the prologue is exciting and fast-paced.

Book I is a lot of fun. We get Sir Percy / the Scarlet Pimpernel in both iterations and we have Marguerite and various members of the League. We also have Martin-Roget (né Pierre Adet) -- now entirely unlikeable, and Yvonne de Kernogan -- now entirely sympathetic. Yvonne's transformation from cruel aristocrat to heroine apparently occurs "off stage", since from the end of the Prologue to the beginning of Book I we must simply accept the fact that she's now the one to cheer for. All that aside, Book I is a lot of fun.

Book II is rather dreary. Mostly, it consists of descriptions of the various cruelties and cruel personalities of The Terror as practiced in Nantes. It's a long while before the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel appears to set things to rights. As ever, whenever Sir Percy is on the page, the story just shines. "Lord Tony's Wife" -- and each of the Scarlet Pimpernel sequels, for that matter -- falters only in not giving us enough of him. Long live the Scarlet Pimpernel!

For the record "Lord Tony's Wife" was published in 1917 and is the third of the Scarlet Pimpernel sequels by order of publication, or the seventh by order of events.

Here is a list of Sir Percy books (not including Scarlet Pimpernel prequels or sequels that don't feature Sir Percy), by order of events (publication date in parentheses): The Scarlet Pimpernel (1905), Sir Percy Leads the Band (1936), The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1919), I Will Repay (1906), The Elusive Pimpernel (1908), Eldorado (1913), Mam'zelle Guillotine (1940), Lord Tony's Wife (1917), Sir Percy Hits Back (1927), Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1929), The Triumph of the Scarlet Pimpernel (1922), A Child of the Revolution (1932). "League" and "Adventures" are short story collections.

Lord Tony Wife Baroness Orczy 9781482020564 Books Reviews

I enjoyed yet another tale of the Scarlet Pimpernel. No wonder movies, plays, and musicals have been written about him and his exploits. As wither other ebooks, this one works very well on the HD.
I had expectations of a Sherlock Holmes genre set in different time/setting. I was disappointed in that so much foreshadowing gave the plot map away and left the reader less motivated to continue reading. I may be a bit harsh but I have read most of the classics so I have high expectations. This would be a good read for a novice.
I love Baroness Orzy's stories. LOVE the Scarlet Pimpernel, Percy's wicked, foppish personality and the Pimpernel's exciting adventures.
The Scarlet Pimpernel series is my one of my favorite historical series. Entertaining and very well written.
This is the first time I am reading this classical story of the Scarlet Pimpernel even though I have always known about this hero. Furthermore I am pretty sure it was a movie. I loved it. Wish it had been an audiobook!
Lord Percy advises and helps the gallant Lord Tony to secretly wed his beloved, Yvonne. The plot is fresh and vibrant, sad and trecherous, happy and chivalrous, detailing more on The Reign Of Terror and how it affected the smaller towns, all in one book!

Orczy's books take you there! Late 1700's - early 1800's! I feel as if I had been there! What great writing!

With the help of a disgruntled and vengeful peasant, Yvonne's father helps kidnap her from Lord Tony, taking her to a place where the peasant plans to marry her, even though she is already married, to make her life miserable, or she and her father will die.

Enter Chauvelin, Lord Tony, and Sir Percy Blakeny and the story rocks along. You will absolutely LOVE how Sir Percy, AKA The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Lord Tony rescue Yvonne and whisk her away in Chauvelin's own carriage! o) Foiled again! The humor, daring, and seriousness of each situation is true to Sir Percy as well as attributed to Lord Tony.

I highly recommend this and all of Orczy's books!

Enjoy!
This was very enjoyable.. We always know the outcome before hand with the Scarlett Pimpernel but it's fun to see how the techie will take place. It's an easy and entertaining read.
