Well, I've been practicing Yang style Tai Chi for some time now and I basically wish to state an observation. Most Tai Chi instructors and classes in the west as such promote doing a form with little or no explanation of what things mean; hence, Tai Chi is portrayed as a new age meditation exercise. To the uninitiated that is what one would be led to believe. Tai Chi's martial aspects are sadly forgotten. Tai Chi in feudal China was actually taught as a martial art. Fortunately I had an instructor from China that knew the martial aspects of Tai Chi. I purchased Yang Tai Chi 24 Form Self-Defense and it is loaded with applications for each of the 24 forms of the beginning Yang style Tai Chi set. You can continue on taking classes for years and not even touch upon the martial applications. For a small pittance, you can understand the martial aspects of Yang style Tai Chi written in concise, clear language without all of the mysticism. You come out a winner in two ways: in both time and expense in learning the practicality of Tai Chi applications. I must say I have augmented my study of Tai Chi twofold.

Most yang tai chi classes are taught with no knowledge of the original objective of tai chi being first and formost a method of self defence. The author shows a good range of self defence moves emanating from the Yang tai chi postures. Although it is difficult to learn self defence moves from a book, I found it a good reference source.
Very good explanation of Yang 24 posture form. The book is helpful for 42 and 108 posture forms as well. I recommend this book regardless of the Tai Chi style practised
Really good quality book. Good photos and well explained. I've practiced Yang style Tai Chi Chuan for over 20 years as a practitioner and instructor and so I think I know what I'm talking about.
As usual Sifu Ken provides depth, practical application and an obvious deep love for this great martial art. Ken is one of these rare people, that although not Asian (as some people think only Asians can teach authentic martial arts which is such a baseless belief) Ken teaches this so much clearer than anyone I have come across. If you like this please do yourself a favour and get his DVDs on taichi (he specializes in Chen particularly which is a fantastic art and more 'martial' in its application. Sifu Ken is the only teacher I will refer to from now on!
Since I've gotten this book, I am asking myself, "why didn't I buy this sooner"? One should know form 24 first, though. This book provides direct and simple self defense instruction on each posture in TC 24 Form. It's making my "workouts" that much more purposeful and engaging. Although I have studied Tai-Chi for about 20 years, and am fairly proficient in six forms, this adds more to my knowledge and work out base. I intend to purchase more of Sifu Gullette's lessons in the future.
If you are already familiar with the Yang Tai Chi 24 Form, then this is an excellent guide to the practical applications thereof for martial or self-defense purposes. The author does a good job of explaining the history of Tai Chi, and focuses on the fact that it was not supposed to be a "meditative art" or relaxing exercise. Instead, the intention was preparation for fighting, and although it is considered a "soft martial art," it is a martial art nonetheless. Each movement is broken down into its possible applications, which could be drilled on their own as a sort of controlled sparring.
I really enjoyed "Yang Tai Chi 24 Self-Defense" by Ken Gullette. The book is well-illustrated and covers the entire 24-movement short form. Mr. Gullette makes the point that the form has many more applications than any one book is able to demonstrate. This book offers quite a few examples of how the form can be used in self-defense, but there are many others. His applications include strikes, take-downs, throws, and joint locks--some of them applied from angles that you might not expect just looking at the movements in the form. Mr. Gullette is a talented teacher and a good writer. I think the e-book price is a bargain, and I can highly recommend his work.
